The Silver Cross was established by Royal Decree in 1869. It was awarded to all military personnel who successfully participated in foreign military campaigns.
The Silver Cross was awarded with at least one campaign clasp. There is a total of 33 clasps. They are:

In addition to the campaign clasps, the Cross could also be awarded with a crown clasp for an honourable mention or with a crossed swords clasp for acts of bravery. If more than one honourable mention was received, the crown clasp featured a number to represent the total number of citations.
The Silver Cross features an obverse inscription that translates to "For War Actions." There may be additional versions that vary slightly in design, in size, or in composition.
