The Flood Relief Medal was established by Royal Decree in 1855. It was awarded in recognition of bravery and self-sacrifice during emergency flood situations. A silver or bronze clasp was worn by recipients who received more than one award.
There are five versions of the Silver Medal that differ in the year inscribed on the reverse. Each has an obverse inscription that translates to "William III, King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg," with a reverse inscription that translates to "Flood of [year]."
A total of 40 Silver Medals were awarded in 1855, 84 in 1861, 85 in 1876, 141 in 1916, and 249 in 1926. A total of 13 silver clasps were awarded in 1861, 10 in 1876, and 1 in 1926.
There may be additional versions that vary in size.
