Russia, Imperial. An Order of Saint Vladimir, II Class Badge, c.1917
(Орден Святого Владимира). Instituted 1782 by Catherine II. Of foreign continental manufacture, in bronze gilt consisting of a red enameled cross pattée with black enameled borders, obverse centre presenting a beautiful hand painted crowned red and ermine mantle with the monogram of St. Vladimir, reverse centre with hand painted institution date on black enamel, measuring 52 mm (w) x 57 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), with elongated loop for neck ribbon, with general enamel wear from use, loss of obverse centre surround, otherwise good/fine.
The Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award, and conferred upon those who served the state for at 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contribution to their professions.
The military division of this order features crossed swords.
There are several variations in the size and style of the badge.
The obverse inscription features the Saint's initials.
