c.1890 A premium "bombe"-type cross finely manufactured in gold with typically well executed red, white and black enamels, obverse centrepeice is extremely well done, with finely applied gold and hand painted detailing, well hallmarked on reverse on both swords 56 zolotniks ( 14kt gold), as well as Kokoshnik assay marked of woman's head, also marked zolotniki fineness number "56" on the integral ring, reverse of ring has makers mark, cross measures 40.58 mm (w) x 44.54mm (h - including ring), on a full-length original neck ribbon with elasticized straps housing a hook and eye closure, 2 o'clock sword with fine period repair (reaffixed to order body in reverse), period replacement loop in bronze, intact enamels, extremely fine.
The Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award, and conferred upon those who served the state for at 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contribution to their professions.
The military division of this order features crossed swords.
