Physical Description and Item Details

Order of St. Vladimir, an altered and impaired Fourth Class Badge by Emanuel Pannasch, St. Petersburg, circa 1835 (marked beneath enamel with IP and Imperial Warrant, date mark on suspension ring illegible), in gold and enamels; the centres on both sides replaced with “non-Christian” type medallions of very crude style (and central surround on reverse also a later replacement), additionally fitted with unofficial swords, 36.8mm (including suspension ring) x 32.8mm, enamel work scuffed but sound, fitted with later suspension and mounted riband, very fine.

History

The Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award, and conferred upon those who served the state for at 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contribution to their professions.

The military division of this order features crossed swords.

There are several variations in the size and style of the badge.

The obverse features the initials of the Saint.
