The Science Merit Medal was instituted on June 16, 1822. The original name is Medaglia al merito civile, and is composed of silver and bronze.
The first versions are dated 1823 and are stamped G.C on the obverse and G.CERBARA MDCCCXXIII on the reverse. The later versions are dated 1875 and are stamped L.GORI INC FIRENZE on the reverse.
