The Punjab Medal was established by the Governor-General of India, Earl of Dalhousie, in 1849 in commemoration of victory in the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-1849). The Medal was awarded to all Indian and British troops in the Honourable East India Company Army who served in campaigns in the Punjab. The award was later extended to members of the British Army in 1850.
The Medal could be awarded with multiple clasps to denote participation in significant battles. Three clasps were awarded in total:
1. "MOOLTAN"
2. "CHILIANWALA"
3. "GOOJERAT"
No recipient received all three clasps, and the "MOOLTAN" and "CHILIANWALA" clasps were never awarded together.
There may be additional versions of the Medal that differ in size.
