The New Zealand Medal was established in 1869 in commemoration of victorious campaigns led in the New Zealand Wars. It was later awarded by the colonial government of New Zealand in 1869.
The Medal was awarded to Officers and enlisted men of the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and colonial volunteers in recognition of service in the New Zealand Wars from 1845-1847, and 1860-1866.
Each medal is stamped on the reverse with the dates of the recipient's service. Due to the personalized inscription, there are at least 28 known versions that differ in inscription. The medals were issued named, but many different naming styles were used. There may be additional versions that differ in size.
