The Natal Rebellion Medal was established by King Edward VII under Natal Militia Order on May 9, 1907. It was awarded to local soldiers and policemen in recognition of 20 to 49 days of continuous service in the suppression of the Zulu Rising of 1906, or the “Bambatha Uprising”. A clasp, “1906” was awarded for 50 or more days of service. It is estimated that approximately 11 000 Silver Medals were issued. Of interesting note, Sergeant Major M.K. Gandhi was a recipient of the Natal Rebellion Medal.
A variety of different naming styles were used, and the Medal was issued both named and unnamed.
