The St. John Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa Medal 1899-1902 was established by the Order of Saint John in 1900 and was officially sanctioned for wear on uniform in 1904. The Medal was awarded to every member of St. John’s Ambulance Brigade who served overseas in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War between 1899 and 1902. It was also awarded to personnel who significantly contributed to the organization’s mobilisation and supply during the Anglo-Boer War, as well as to members who went to China from South Africa to serve in the Boxer Rebellion. Approximately 1871 Medals were issued.
The Bronze Medal may also have been awarded posthumously.
The Medal features a Latin motto that translates to, “For the Faith in the Service of Mankind.”
