The Defence of Gibraltar Medal was privately instituted by military commanders George Augustus Eliott and Sir Thomas Picton to commemorate the defence of Gibraltar during the Franco-Spanish siege of 1779-1783. Eliott's Medal was awarded to Hanoverian troops who were present during the siege of Gibraltar while Picton's Medal was awarded to British forces present during the siege.
