History

The Egypt Medal (1882-1889) was established in October 1882 to commemorate service in the Anglo-Egyptian War, although it was amended a number of times to include campaigns up to and including those from 1889. The Medal was first awarded to Officers and men of the Royal Navy for service in Egypt from July 11, 1882, to September 14, 1882, and to Officers and men of the British Army for service in Egypt from July 16, 1882, to September 14, 1882. Medals awarded for service in the Anglo-Egyptian War are dated on the reverse, while medals awarded from subsequent campaigns are undated. The Medal was also later extended to Egyptian troops.

The Medal could be awarded with clasps to denote service in specific campaigns. Multiple clasps could be awarded to the same recipient, with 7 clasps being the most awarded to one recipient. The following 13 clasps were officially awarded:

1. "ALEXANDRIA 11TH JULY"
2. "TEL-EL-KEBIR"
3. "SUAKIN 1884"
4. "EL-TEB"
5. "TAMAAI"
6. "EL-TEB_TAMAAI"
7. "THE NILE 1884-85"
8. "ABU KLEA"
9. "KIRBEKAN"
10. "SUAKIN 1885"
11. "TOFREK"
12. "GEMAIZAH 1888"
13. "TOSKI 1889"

The Medal was generally issued named, but a number of different naming styles were used. Medals awarded to Egyptian troops may be named in Arabic. There may be additional versions that differ in size.

Recipients of this Medal were entitled to receive one of four models of the Khedive's Star conferred by the Khedive of Egypt for service in the Anglo-Egyptian War.
