The Corps of Commissionaires Medal was instituted by the Corps of Commissionaires, which was established by Captain Sir Edward Walter in 1859 to provide employment for ex-servicemen returning home from duty, was awarded to members of the Corps in recognition of long and exemplary service.

The Silver Medal features an obverse Latin inscription which translates to "By Valour and Industry Work Conquers All."

There are 2 versions of the Medal which vary by composition.
