History

The Maidstone Typhoid Medal was awarded to nursing staff, ancillary services and other personnel who served in Maidstone during the Typhoid epidemic in 1897. It is estimated that the Typhoid epidemic had infected 1200 to 2000 people, resulting in approximately 132 deaths. The high survival rate is believed to be due to the service of nursing and medical personnel. Many recipients were presented the award by the Mayor of Maidstone during a special ceremony held at the Museum and Technical School on December 8, 1897. Approximately 220 Medals were awarded.
