The Union of South Africa Commemoration Medal was instituted by King George V by Royal Warrant on October 3, 1910. The Silver Medal was the first award struck by King George V and was awarded to civil and military leaders who were involved in the proceedings of the inauguration of Parliament of the Union of South Africa by HRH the Duke of Connaught following the South Africa Act of 1909 which unified the colonies, Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange Free State. It is estimated that 551 Medals were issued.
The Medal was issued unnamed, but privately altered versions may be encountered.
