History

The Royal Victorian Chain was instituted by King Edward VII in 1902 in honour of Queen Victoria. The Royal Victorian Chain has no rank but was created as a mark of the highest distinction and special favour on part of the sovereign. The award is conferred on special occasions upon foreign royal personages or other especially distinguished foreign or British members of the royal entourage in recognition of service to the sovereign. Since 1937, ladies have been eligible for the award.

There are 2 versions of the Royal Victorian Chain which vary by composition. Until 1921, the chain was composed of silver-gilt and enamel. In 1921, diamonds were incorporated into the design of the chain.

The award is worn by men in the form of a collar and by women in the form of a shoulder badge worn from a bow.

The Royal Victorian Chain is often associated with the Royal Victorian Order, however, it is not an official grade of the Royal Victorian Order.
