History

In general, the uniforms of the male Hitler Youth members consisted of a top, a neckerchief and woggle – but a tie for officers –, bottoms, a belt, knee socks, and shoes or boots.

The overcoat was worn since 1933 by all non-leaders of the Hitler Youth during the winter months between October 15th and April 14th. A regulation from October 15th, 1937 stated that the overcoat was no longer worn with the dress uniform, only with the undress uniform in place of the rain cape during severe cold weather.

It was olive-brown, made from cotton, and features a fall-down collar, two pleated breast patch pockets with a buttoned flap, and two slash concealed hip pockets with an unbuttoned flap. It was closed at the front by six buttons, was worn closed at the collar, and had turn-back cuffs. The reverse featured a double-button overlapping cotton belt and a slash down the center.

The buttons were made of dark brown leather. However, leather was switched from brown to black, starting on January 1, 1937, by a regulation from December 19, 1935.

The service overcoat of the Aviation HJ members was identical, except that after 1938 all items worn during the winter months (October 15 to April 14) or during flying exercises were of Luftwaffe blue-grey colour.
