History

In general, the uniforms of the male Hitler Youth members consisted of a top, a neckerchief and woggle – but a tie for officers –, bottoms, a belt, knee socks, and shoes or boots.

The dress tunic was introduced in 1933, and was worn by all male members of the HJ. It was the main top garment of the winter undress uniform. It is uncertain if leaders wore this garment, but a special leader tunic was only mentioned in regulations as early as January 1935.

Referred to as a "Waffenrock", it was made from light brown wool, and has a rolled-back open collar and lapel. Four buttons close it in the front. It features two pleated breast patch pockets with a buttoned flap, and two unpleated patch hip pockets, again with a buttoned flap. The cuffs are rolled-back cuffs, and it has metal belt ramps (Seitenhaken) at each side at the waist seam. Metal buttons on the shoulders hold the shoulder straps. It was worn with a leather belt and brown leather cross strap, and has light natural coloured leather buttons. However, leather was switched from brown to black, starting on January 1, 1937, by a regulation from December 19, 1935.
It is lined with brown satin and has an inside breast pocket.

The dress tunic of the Aviation HJ members was identical, except that after 1938 all items worn during the winter months (October 15 to April 14) or during flying exercises were of Luftwaffe blue-grey colour.
