Physical Description and Item Details

The service shirt is fabricated from greenish-brown cotton, the collar trimmed in a black embroidered cord, with both sides of the collar adorned with NSDAP 3rd Regulation collar tabs used between 1936 and 1939, the collar tabs incorporating two white embroidered strips in a L-shape sewn in place on the brown corduroy upper, each strip with a repeating pattern of swastikas, indicating the rank of Hauptstellenleiter (Main Branch Manager), the edges of the collar tabs also trimmed in black embroidered cord, the black indicating a Kreis Level Administrative Position member. There is an NSDAP armband sewn place on the left sleeve, the armband with a white cotton circular patch bearing a black screen-printed swastika sewn in place on a red cotton field, the red cotton field stamped in black ink with a spread-winged eagle clenching a wreathed swastika in its talons. There are two pockets on the front, one on each breast, each designed with a decorative pleat, each pocket with a silvered magnetic metal button that is maker marked "UE 76/6" and marked with the RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia on the reverse, and completed with a fold over flap with reinforced button hole. All nine of the silvered magnetic metal buttons on the shirt illustrate a spread-winged eagle clenching a wreathed swastika in its talons and a pebbled background. The front has a vertical row of three silvered magnetic metal buttons sewn in place on the right side, the top button marked "M 5 76/6" and marked with the RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia on the reverse, the middle button maker marked "M5/8", marked with a stylized "A" (F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid) and marked "EXTRA FEIN" on the reverse, the bottom button maker marked "M5/75/3" and marked with the RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia on the reverse. There is a brown plastic button sewn in place at the neckline above the three silvered magnetic buttons and a reinforced button hole added below the last of the these buttons at the waist. Each of the aforementioned items face five reinforced button holes on the left side. There are four belt loops at the waist, two at the front and two at the back. The sleeves have French cuffs, each of which are held in place via two silvered magnetic metal buttons that are placed back-to-back and joined by a loop, all four buttons maker marked "UE 76/6" and marked with the RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia on the reverse. Inside, there is an 85 mm wide band placed at the waist, with six short and wide elastics sewn in place upon it, placed in three pairs along the waistband, one pair on either side at the front and one pair at the back, along with a large partial RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia stamped in white ink beside the seam leading into the left armpit. Just inside the opening on the right side is a manufacturer's label printed in light brown ink on white cloth and sewn in place on the waistband, the label marked with a large RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia at the far right, marked "Diensthemd" (Service Shirt), "Hersteller" (Manufacturer) and maker coded "B 18/600", marked Reichszeugmeisterei der NSDAP, marked with a "B" and numbered "No 372291", the label penetrated by the bottom reinforced button hole that appears on the front and obscures a word below "Diensthemd". The collar is stamped in black ink "46 and "36" and is complemented by a tie fabricated from a greenish-brow rayon, the bottom edge of which is trimmed in brown, the rear seam of the tie with a manufacturer's label printed in brown ink on white cloth and sewn in place, the label marked with a large RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) insignia, marked "mit Kennkarte f. Politische Leiter u. DAF. / Reichszeugmeisterei der NSDAP.", marked with a "B" and numbered "No 39730". The service shirt measures 400 across the shoulders x 460 mm in length and exhibits light soiling on the white cotton circular patch on the armband. Very fine.

History

The uniforms, headgear, and insignia of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP) went through several design changes from 1933 until the end of the Second World War. Dr. Ley, originally the Gauleiter of Rheinland and later promoted to the position of chief of staff of Party Organization and Reich Organization Leader, was largely responsible for the NSDAP rank system and uniforms.

The standardized production and circulation of all NSDAP uniform garments, headgear, and insignia were overseen by the National Material Control Office (RZM or Reichszeugmeisterei). The RZM was created in July 1934, and it was located in Munich. From 1935 onward, all NSDAP uniform garments and insignia were legally required to feature an RZM control mark or tag, as well as a number mark on metal insignia or belt buckles. These marks indicate the authenticity of the object, the type of insignia or garment, and identify the manufacturer.

The style of the NSDAP uniform was initially based upon the castoffs of the tropical uniform that were used by the German Army during the First World War. While these brown shirts and trousers were worn by NSDAP members prior to the standardization of the NSDAP uniform, their general design was mirrored in the final NSDAP uniform designs.

The service blouse was introduced in 1939, and it is composed of brown fabric. It is also known as the Brown Service Shirt (not to be confused with the Service Shirt). The collar is piped according to the wearer's rank level. Piping colours before 1939 include yellow for Reichsleitung level (national), red for Gauleitung level (larger district (Gau) level), black for Kreisleitung (district level), and light blue for Ortsgruppenleitung (local level). In 1939, this was changed to golden-yellow for Reichsleitung level, dark red for Gauleitung level, white for Kreisleitung level, and light blue for Ortsgruppenleitung level.

It features two pleated patch pockets, with one on either breast, five buttons along the front seam, an RZM tag, a waistband with metal hooks or cloth belt loops, and several types of rank insignia.

The buttons on these blouses may be silver-coloured or gold-coloured (gilt), depending on the rank of the wearer, and they feature the image of the NSDAP national emblem eagle.

The breast pockets are closed by a scalloped flap and a single button. Both sleeve cuffs are also closed by a single button.

The front closure features three metal buttons and two plastic buttons. The plastic buttons are located at the bottom and top of the front closure.

The RZM tag is generally located along the blouse’s neck section.
