A fine example of the Honor Goblet to a fighter ace. In Alpaca, by official maker Wagner and Sohn (stamped underneath the goblet), officially engraved "Unteroffizier Gerhard Hübner 28.1.43."; with a pleasing dark patina, no dents, extremely fine. Footnote: Unteroffizier Gerhard Hübner gained 20 air victories as a member of Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) (52nd Fighter Wing) of the Luftwaffe, the most successful fighter-wing of all time, with a claimed total of more than 10,000 victories over enemy aircraft during World War II. It was the unit of the top three scoring flying aces of all time, Erich Hartmann, Gerhard Barkhorn and Günther Rall. The unit flew exclusively with the various versions of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 throughout the war. Gerhard Hübner was MIA at 6th March 1943.
The Honour Goblet of the Luftwaffe was instituted in February 27, 1940 by Hermann Göring. It was awarded to pilots and other flying personnel. Ca. 58,000 awards were made on paper, however, only between 13,000 and 15,000 were actually given out.
The Honour Goblet was either made of feinsilber or nickel-silver (alpaca). It measures ca. 200 mm in height and 100 mm in diameter.
Göring's Honour Goblet was based on a World War I aviation award, the "Ehrenbecher für den Sieger im Luftkampfe", or Honour Goblet for the Victor in Air Combat.
