The decoration was instituted on June 30th, 1941 by Hermann Göring as commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe. To be eligible, recipients had to serve in the Luftwaffe for at least one year with exceptional service. It is likely that, generally speaking, recipients would first have been awarded the War Merit Cross.
The obverse of the award shows the head of Göring, facing to the viewer's left. The reverse shows a Luftwaffe eagle with swastika.
The thickness of the award is 3.7mm and it weighs approximately 140 grams. It was awarded in a case with an exterior of dark blue or black leatherette.
The German title of the award is "Anerkennungsplakette für ausgezeichnete Leistungen im technischen Dienst der Luftwaffe".
