History

The Eagle Shield decoration was established by Reich President Friedrich Ebert on November 15, 1922. It was awarded for merits in the fields of art, culture, humanities, science, and economy.

The reverse inscription was customized individually for each recipient. There were ca. 65 recipients, 20 of which during the time of the Weimar Republic.

With the NSDAP coming into power, the design of the eagle was slightly changed.
