An exceptionally rare and unique Gold Grade Naval Wound Badge, constructed of solid die-stamped gilded bronze, the obverse consisting of an oval chain link wreath, set around a raised anchor overlaid by crossed swords on a pebbled field, the reverse with a crimped barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, stamped with a mark of an unidentified manufacturer, measuring 41.25 mm (w) x 46.50 mm (h), weighing 15.0 grams, a scarce example in near mint condition.
The Naval Wound Badge was instituted by Emperor Wilhelm II to reward and recognize the sacrifice of German Navy personnel wounded in active service during the First World War.
The Gold Badge was conferred for five or more wounds, as well as to personnel who had lost a limb.
The Silver Badge was conferred for three to four wounds.
The Black Badge was conferred for one to two wounds.
