Constructed of blackened bronze, the obverse depicts a Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) on top of crossed swords on a pebbled field with laurel branch wreath, maker marked on reverse J.R.G.M., reverse with functional hinge/catch assembly, measuring 39.29 mm (w) x 42.22 mm (h), weighing 8.4 grams, in near extremely fine condition.
The Wound Badge was instituted by Wilhelm II to reward and recognize the sacrifice of German Military personnel wounded in active service during World War I.
The Gold Badge was conferred for five or more wounds, as well as to personnel who had lost a limb.
The Silver Badge was conferred for three or fours wounds.
The Black Badge was conferred for one or two wounds.
