A circular medal constructed of lead. The obverse bears the image of a seated youth holding a Victoria in one hand. Below and between the legs of the seated youth is the inscription "DEM VERDIENSTE" (for merit). The reverse bears the crowned coat of arms of Bremen being held at each side by a lion. Below the coat of arms is the inscription "DER SENAT D. FREIEN HANSESTADT BREMEN" (the senat of the free Hanseatic city of Bremen). On a loop for suspension, on a half red and half white ribbon. Measuring 67mm in diameter.
The Merit Medal was established by the Senate of Bremen on December 2, 1902. It was awarded at the discretion of the Senate. There are no definite award stipulations.
Seven Merit Medals in Gold were awarded from 1902 to 1915, four of which were given as grand prizes at trade exhibitions.
In 1928, the Merit Medal was conferred upon the crew of the aircraft “Bremen”. The medals can be found with and without the stamp "H.HAHN/FEC". The medal was awarded until 1976.
