A cross pattée constructed of bronze. The obverse bears the inscription "1848 UND 1849" across the 9 and 3 o'clock arms, with a crowned eagle with outstretched wings on the 12 o'clock arm and a wreath on the 6 o'clock arm. The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR TREUE DIENST IM KRIEGE" (for loyal services in war). On a loop for suspension, on a white ribbon with red stripes.
The Veterans' Cross for the Line Battalions of Frankfurt was established by the Senate of the Free City of Frankfurt on February 21, 1854. The medal was conferred upon veterans of the Rhine Army who participated in the campaign against Denmark in the First Schleswig War. The war was rooted in a dispute over which nation would control the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. The conflict occurred between the years of 1848 and 1851, and ultimately resulted in a Danish victory, until the Second Schleswig War occured in 1864.
The engraver of this cross was Johann P. Henrich, Frankfurt.
