Nishan-i-Astour. Instituted in 1920. Type IV (1931-1960) Hardshelled, wooden-framed, red cloth exterior, marked with a gilt Afghan coat-of-arms within a corn wreath on the lid, padded salmon-coloured silk-like lining which is Afghan maker marked on the inside lid, salmon-coloured velvet raised platform with recessed medal bed for the breast star, dual-hinged, latch closure, measuring 135 mm (w) x 300 mm (h) x 56.5 mm (d), soiling and wear evident on the exterior, lightly soiled velvet on the medal bed, fine.
The Order of the Star (Nishan-i-Astour) was established by Amir Abdu'r Rahman around 1901. The Order originally awarded in a single class in recognition of faithful service provided to the nation. The Order was later modified and expanded into 4 Classes by King Muhammad Zahir Shah.
There is expected to be additional versions associated with the Order which vary by design and composition according to the time period or monarch of institution. However, due to uncertainty and complexity surrounding the award, these are not featured here.
