The Judicial Badge was instituted by the last Khedive of Egypt, Abbas II Hilmi Bey. The Badge is issued in 3 grades and was worn by Egyptian as well as foreign judges who were appointed to the Mixed Courts of Egypt. The Mixed Courts of Egypt, established by Khedive Abbas II Hilmi in 1875 or 1876, functioned as an international tribunal for the legal administration of Egypt and radically reformed Egypt's legal system. The Mixed Courts of Egypt incorporate elements from French Civil Code, British Common Law, and Islamic Law and are composed of 3 courts.
The Gold Insignia was worn by judges of the International Court of Appeals. The Silver and Gold Insignia was worn by judges of the District Courts and the Silver Insignia was worn by judges of the Parquet (office of the Attorney General).
The Insignia features an obverse Arabic inscription which is believed to translate to "Justice is the foundation of governance."
