History

The Cross of Valour was instituted on 14 February 1975 to recognise individuals who perform courageous acts in situations of extreme danger. The Medal is primarily conferred upon civilians, although, it can be conferred upon military personnel for situations where there are no appropriate military decorations. To date, only five awards have been issued and all to civilians.

The Cross of Valour is Australia’s highest award for bravery, followed by the Star of Courage, the Bravery Medal, and the Commendation for Brave Conduct.

The award is a straight-armed cross pattée with fluted rays between the arms. The obverse of the cross features the Commonwealth Coat of Arms with the Federation Star above it. The medal attaches to the ribbon with a straight metal bar, engraved with inscription ‘FOR VALOUR.’

Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters 'CV'.
