History

The Order of Samoa was instituted by the Legislative Assembly of Samoa by the Honours and Awards Act on August 25, 1999. The Grand Order of Samoa (Special Class) is the State badge of office and is conferred upon the ruling Head of State. It is conferred upon the successor upon the death or retirement of the Head of State. His Highness Malieta Tanumafili II, Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa, is the only recipient who will retain his Order.

Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters GOS.

The award is accompanied with a certificate and a miniature version of the medal and ribbon.
