This medal was instituted during the reign of Alexander I. It was conferred upon non-commissioned officers of the Russian frigates Neva and Nadejda, in commemoration of the sailing of the two Russian frigates Neva and the Nadejda.
The reverse inscription translates to: "For the Circumnavigation of the Earth".
