A Magnificent 2nd Class Badge of extra large size, 2nd half of the 19th century, in gold and enamels. The center, rays and suspension set with fine cushion shaped and rose cut diamonds. The gold rays in extremely fine gold filigree-technique. The center with figure of Saint Catherine in finest hand painted enamels. Obverse center with usual minor chipping on the edge, otherwise in perfect condition.A quite similar somewhat earlier piece from the collection of the Kremlin History Museum illustrated by Nikitina page 19.One of the finest and most impressive badges of this order that has appeared at auction in recent years. 91 x 79 mm excluding ring suspension. Total height: 120 mm.
The Order of St. Catherine was founded in 1714 by Tsar Peter the First to commemorate his wife's courage during the the Ottoman campaign of 1711. After his wife's death in 1727 the order was disbanded, but in 1797 Emperor Paul I reissued and redesigned the Order.
The Order can only be conferred upon women.
The Lesser Cross was conferred upon women who were part of the Empress's entourage, and to those who supplemented their life at Court with charitable works.
