Russia. Order of St George, Second Class set of insignia, without maker’s marks but of good quality private manufacture, comprising: neck badge, in gold and enamels, with provincial (?) kokoshnik on reverse of suspension loop and with split-ring riband carrier, width 49mm; and breast star, in silver-gilt with gold and enamel centre, reverse with vertical brooch-pin for wearing, height 87.5mm, clearly well-worn and sometimes cleaned in the past and right-hand tip of the star slightly bent, generally very fine.
This Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award. It was conferred upon those who served the state for at least 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contributions to their professions.
The earliest versions of the stars were embroidered silver.
The obverse features an inscription, translated as "For Service and Bravery".
