Monaco
The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state, country and microstate on the French Riviera in Western Europe. It is bordered by France on three sides while the other side borders the Mediterranean Sea. The official language is French, but Monégasque, Italian, and English are widely spoken and understood.
Monaco is with a total area of 0.780 square miles, the second-smallest state in the world. Its population is about 30,000. Caused by its tax laws, Monaco is known as a playground for the rich and famous. In 2014, it was noted about 30% of the population was made up of millionaires.
Monaco is a principality governed under a monarchy. Prince Albert II is the head of state. The House of Grimaldi have ruled Monaco, with brief interruptions, since 1297. The state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. Despite Monaco's independence and separate foreign policy, France is responsible of it's defense.
The Order of St. Charles is the highest-ranking decoration in Monaco and was established on March 15, 1858. It is conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the State or the Sovereign Prince. The Sovereign is Grand Master.
