History
The Cross of Merit was established by Royal Decree in 1941. It is awarded to Dutch military personnel and civilians in recognition of meritorious service during periods of war. It may also be awarded posthumously.
From 1941-1944, the Cross was awarded with a bar clasp for specials actions, but this combination was discontinued in 1944 in favour of the Bronze Lion. A clasp with an Arabic numeral is currently awarded for each additional citation to denote the total number of received awards.
The Bronze Cross features a reverse inscription that translates to "For Merit." Crosses produced since 2000 feature a ball suspension. There may be additional versions that vary in size.
