History
Arthus-Bertrand was founded in 1803 by an army officer during the French Revolution named Claude Arthus-Bertrand. The firm’s name changed several times. “Arthus-Bertrand et Beranger” was short lived from 1898 until 1901. It was then changed to “Arthus-Bertrand, Beranger & Magdelaine” from 1901 to 1917. “Arthus-Bertrand et Cie” was introduced in 1917, and is still currently in use. This firm was Paris’s main manufacturer of orders since 1927, and the early insignia was extremely well made, often identified by a small square hallmark “A*B &Cie.”
As of March, 2016, Arthus-Bertrand became a maker for several British Orders, causing controversy in the UK. The orders include the Order of the Bath, Badge and Star of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Medal of the Distinguished Service Order and the medals for citizen CBEs.
