Bangladesh
The People's Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India and Myanmar. Bangladesh is a unitary parliamentary republic with a president and a prime minister. The country's population is almost 163 million. The capital city is Dhake, which is also the largest city. The official language is Bengali. Bangladesh is the 8th most populous country in the world.
Bangladesh was in the past a part of the Bengal region of India. It was ruled by the same empires that controlled central India. From 1858 to 1947, the British controlled the country. After that, the Muslim section of Bengal became a noncontinuous part of the new nation of Pakistan, called East Pakistan. On January 11, 1972, Bangladesh became an independent parliamentary democracy.
The Order of Military Merit is highest title and is conferred upon all members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.
