Cambodia
The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia. It is bounded by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The country has a population of over 16 million. The capitol and largest city is Phnom Penh. The official language is Khmer. The country is under a constitutional monarchy and is ruled by Hun Sen, who has been the head of the government of Cambodia for the past 25 years, establishing himself as the longest serving non-royal leader in South East Asia.
From the 9th to the 15th century Cambodia experienced its heyday. It was the kingdom of Kambuja. In 1863, Cambodia came under French supremacy. After independence in 1953, Cambodia was initially spared by the military conflicts in Indochina, but in 1970 was drawn into after a military coup in the Second Indochina War. After years of civil war, the Khmer Rouge founded a terror regime in 1975, resulting in the death of many. The aim of the party (Khmer Rouge) was to establish a classless state with a rural agrarian economy. 1979 the Khmer Rouge were overthrown by the Vietnamese. Cambodia was occupied by Vietnam for ten years, until 1993, when a new constitution and the restoration of the monarchy followed.
