Slovenia
The Republic of Slovenia is a country located in southern Central Europe. It is bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and the Adriatic Sea. It covers 7,827 square miles and has a population of 2.07 million. Slovenia is a parliamentary republic with Ljubljana as capital and largest city. The official language is Slovene.
The current territory of Slovenia was part of many different states. They merged with the Kingdom of Serbia into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in December 1918. During World War II, Slovenia was occupied and annexed by several countries. Afterward, it was a founding member of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, which was first a communist state. In June 1991, Slovenia split from Yugoslavia and became an independent country. The economy of Slovenia is small and export-oriented, and has been severely hurt by the Eurozone crisis, started in the late 2000s.
The Orders of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia were established in 1992. It is conferred upon Slovenian citizens, foreign nationals, and members of foreign international organizations in recognition of service in support of the independence and freedom of the Republic, or for services related to gaining Slovenian freedom and independence, as well as for courageous actions to protect the freedom of the Slovenia.
