Argentina


Argentina, officially named the Argentine Republic, is located along with Chile in the Southern Cone of South America. It is bordered with Chile to the west, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Drake Passage to the South. Argentina is the largest Spanish-speaking nation. It is a federal sovereign state subdivided into twenty-three provinces that have their own constitutions. Buenos Aires is its federal capital, and largest city. The Sun of May is one of the most acknowledge national emblem in the country.

Following more than eight years of conflict against Spain, the Argentine independence leading by General San Martín was declared on July 9, 1816. Then, it was created the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata that faced several military conflicts throughout the nineteenth century: first to expel Spain from South America; then against Brazil and Paraguay over control of Uruguay, and finally against the indigenous living on the south.

After the Great Depression of 1929, Argentina suffered serious political instability that favored the military dictatorship in the country throughout the twentieth century. In 1982, Argentina disputed the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands against United Kingdom. This engagement was a decisive factor to end the dictatorial governments in the country.

Argentina inherited the Buenos Aires Mint from colonial times which was used to struck the first Argentine medals rewarding the fighters of the War of Independence. Currently, Argentina's highest decoration is the Order of the Liberator General San Martin.
